Floor Lamps for a Dark Corner: Which Kind Lights Your Room

For a room with no ceiling light, a bright LED floor lamp aimed at the ceiling lights most of it from one corner. Beside a chair or a bed, a lamp with a head you can aim puts the light on the page. Where a corner just feels dark, a lamp with a fabric, glass or woven shade gives a warm glow. They all plug into an outlet, so nothing gets wired in and they move with you.

Bright LED floor lamps

Good for: A room with no ceiling light, where one lamp has to light most of it

  • Deposit Risk: Low
  • Landlord Permission: Not usually needed
  • Take It With You: Yes

A tall pole with a wide LED head that you aim at the ceiling, so the light bounces back across the room. The examples here dim and change from warm to cool light by remote.

Check before you buy

Check the lumens: a lamp that lights a room needs far more than one for mood, and the lumens calculator linked below works out what your room needs. A tall lamp needs a heavy base, and the cord has to reach an outlet without crossing a walkway.

At move-out

Unplug it and take it apart for the move. Nothing is attached to the apartment, and it goes with you.

    Light
    1800 lumens at 30 W; dims from 10% to 100%; 3000K to 6500K

    • Built-in LEDs that the maker rates for 50,000 hours; no bulb to change
    • Timer and memory

A floor lamp with a gooseneck or a turning head points the light at a book or a hobby, while the rest of the corner stays softer. One example adds an uplight for the room.

Check before you buy

Stand the lamp beside the chair, not behind it, and check that the head reaches over the seat. Check the bulb as well: one example comes with none, so the light depends on the bulbs you buy.

At move-out

Unplug it and take it apart for the move. Nothing is attached to the apartment, and it goes with you.

Examples on Amazon

  • Globe Electric Delilah 72 Inch Torchiere with Reading Light

Torchiere floor lamp with a gooseneck reading light; bulbs sold separately

    • Separate switches; a 3-way switch on the torchiere
    • LED bulbs work, the maker says

Two lamps in one: light the room from the torchiere and aim the gooseneck at a book. The bulbs aren't in the box, so choose them by lumens; the watts are the most each socket takes.

Shade lamps for a soft glow

  • Deposit Risk: Low
  • Landlord Permission: Not usually needed
  • Take It With You: Yes

A lamp with a fabric, glass or woven shade gives a soft, warm light that makes a dark corner feel lived in. It won't light a whole room, so pair it with a brighter lamp if the room has no ceiling light.

Check before you buy

Check the bulb and the lumens where the maker lists them: some of these give a glow rather than light to read by. Run the cord along the wall, and put a foot switch where nobody trips on it.

At move-out

Unplug it and take it apart for the move. Nothing is attached to the apartment, and it goes with you.

Before you buy

Work out the light you need. A corner lamp in a room with a ceiling light only has to add warmth. In a room without one, it has to light the room, and that takes many more lumens. The lumens calculator works out the total for your room and how many lamp bulbs that takes.

Find the outlet. Measure from the corner to the nearest outlet and compare it with the cord length where the maker gives one. A cord that crosses a walkway is a trip hazard, so pick the corner with the outlet when you can.

Check the height and the base. A tall lamp needs a heavy or wide base to stand steady, especially near a door that swings or a pet that runs. For reading, the head has to reach over the seat from beside the chair.

Pick the color of the light. Warm light suits a living room or a bedroom in the evening, and cooler light suits a desk. Several examples here switch between them, and those with a standard E26 socket take whichever bulb you choose.

At move-out

Unplug the lamp and take it apart the way it went together. Look at the floor where the base stood, and pack bulbs and glass shades on their own.

Renter tip

Counting what more lamps will cost over your lease? The renter upgrade cost calculator spreads the price over the months you’ll live there.

Daylight is the other half of a bright room. If the windows are bare, the no-drill blinds guide compares shades that let light in by day and block it at night.

How we chose the examples

  • Plugs into a wall outlet, so nothing is wired in and it moves with you.
  • Lumens or the bulb published by the maker where the listing gives them, so you can match the light to the room.
  • A mix of jobs: lighting a whole room, reading in a chair and a soft glow in a corner.
  • A weighted or wide base, so a tall lamp stands steady.

Each kind shows three badges: Deposit Risk, whether you'll usually need Landlord Permission, and whether you can Take It With You. They're general guidance, and leases differ, so check yours. We describe products from the makers' own specs and instructions. Unless this page says otherwise, we haven't tested them ourselves.

Frequently asked questions

How many lumens does a floor lamp need to light a room?

It depends on the room's size and what you do in it. A lamp that lights a living room with no ceiling light needs far more lumens than one for mood. The lumens calculator works out the total for your room, and each example above lists its lumens where the maker does.

Where should a floor lamp go in a dark corner?

Close enough to an outlet that the cord doesn't cross a walkway, and a little out from the walls so the light spreads. For reading, stand it beside the chair, not behind it.

Is a torchiere floor lamp bright enough to light a room?

A bright LED torchiere aimed at the ceiling can light much of a small room, since the ceiling spreads the light. A pale ceiling reflects more of it than a dark one.

Can I use an extension cord with a floor lamp?

If the cord won't reach, use an extension cord rated for the lamp, and run it along the wall rather than across a walkway or under a rug.

Do I need my landlord's permission for a floor lamp?

No: it plugs into an outlet and nothing is attached to the apartment. Adding a ceiling fixture or wiring in a light is different, and needs written permission.

What color temperature suits a living room?

Warm light, around 2700K to 3000K, feels cozy in the evening, and cooler light looks brighter for work. Several examples above let you switch between them.
