Renter Friendly Curtain Rods: No-Drill Options for Every Window
For most windows, an adjustable rod on adhesive brackets is the easiest way to hang curtains without drilling. If your window sits in a recessed frame, a tension rod needs no adhesive at all. With blinds already up, brackets that clip onto the blinds hold a rod in front of them. For heavier curtains, brackets with tiny nails or pins hold more, but they leave small holes.

Which one fits your window?
| If you have | Look at | Deposit Risk |
|---|---|---|
| A window set into a recess, with a frame on both sides | Tension rods | Low |
| Blinds already mounted at the top of the window | Brackets that clip onto blinds | Low |
| A smooth wall, tile or painted trim, and light curtains | Adhesive rods and brackets | Medium |
| Wood window trim with some depth to it | Brackets that tap into trim | High |
| Heavier curtains on painted drywall | Brackets with adhesive and tiny nails | High |
Measure first
The rod has to span the window, or fit inside the frame for a tension rod, and the panels have to be wide and long enough. The curtain size calculator works out the rod length and the panel size for either setup.
Tension rods
Good for: A window set into a recess, with a frame on both sides
- Deposit Risk: Low
- Landlord Permission: Not usually needed
- Take It With You: Yes
A spring inside the rod presses it against both sides of a recessed window or a doorway, so nothing sticks to the wall and nothing goes into it. That makes it the lowest-risk way to hang curtains.
Check before you buy
It only works where there's a frame on both sides to press against, not on a flat wall above the window. Tension rods hold less than bracket rods, so keep to sheers and light panels. The curtain size calculator has a tension rod setting for sizing one inside the frame.
At move-out
Twist it shorter and lift it out. Nothing stays behind, and it goes with you.

AIZESI Tension Rod
Spring tension rod
- Fits
- 24 to 46 in, inside a window frame or doorway
- Holds
- Lower than the bracket rods; for light curtains (see the listing for its rating)
- Stainless steel
- Twists to lock in place
Check the rating on the listing against the weight of your curtains before you buy: a tension rod holds less than the bracket rods in this guide.

Brackets that clip onto blinds
Good for: Blinds already mounted at the top of the window
- Deposit Risk: Low
- Landlord Permission: Not usually needed
- Take It With You: Yes
These brackets clip onto the top rail of the blinds you already have and hold a rod in front of them, so curtains hang over the blinds without anything new on the wall.
Check before you buy
Measure the blinds' top rail before you order: if it's outside the brackets' range, they won't grip. The weight hangs on blinds that belong to your landlord, so keep the curtains light.
At move-out
Unclip the brackets from the blinds. Nothing touches the wall, and they go with you, though they only fit blinds with a similar top rail.

onneka Over-Blinds Curtain Rod Brackets
Brackets that clip onto blinds; rod sold separately
- Fits
- Blind headrails 1.3 to 2 in wide; rods up to 1 in across
- Holds
- Not listed; the maker suggests two brackets for rods under 5 ft and more for wider rods
With no weight rating listed, add brackets as the maker suggests for a wider rod, and keep the curtains light. You supply the rod, so check its diameter against the brackets' range.

Adhesive rods and brackets
Good for: A smooth wall, tile or painted trim, and light curtains
- Deposit Risk: Medium
- Landlord Permission: Not usually needed
- Take It With You: Partly
Brackets with adhesive pads stick to the wall or the trim, and the rod sits on them like a regular rod. Most kits are a telescoping rod with two brackets; bracket packs hold a rod you already own.
Check before you buy
Look at the rating for adhesive alone. The higher number in many listings needs the included screws, and once you drill it's no longer a no-drill setup. Adhesive holds best on smooth, clean surfaces, so a textured wall is a weaker base, and wait as long as the instructions say before you hang the curtains.
At move-out
Lift the rod off, then take the brackets down the way the maker's instructions say. Peel adhesive slowly instead of pulling it straight off, and test any residue remover on a hidden spot first. The rod goes with you; plan on new adhesive pads or brackets for the next place.

Brackets that tap into trim
Good for: Wood window trim with some depth to it
- Deposit Risk: High
- Landlord Permission: Check your lease
- Take It With You: Yes
Small pins tapped into the wood trim hold the brackets, so there's no drilling and no adhesive. They carry one of the highest ratings in this guide.
Check before you buy
They need wood trim with some depth, so they won't work on a flat wall with no molding. The pins leave small holes in the trim, so check your lease first.
At move-out
Take the brackets off the trim as the instructions describe. The pins leave small holes: check your lease and ask your landlord whether you should fill them. The brackets go with you.

Spark Innovators Tap Brackets
Brackets that tap into trim, no rod
- Fits
- Window trim at least 1/2 in deep; rods up to 1.25 in across
- Holds
- Up to 30 lb
- Small pins instead of screws or adhesive
You supply the rod, so check its diameter against the brackets' range, and measure how deep your trim is before you order.

Brackets with adhesive and tiny nails
Good for: Heavier curtains on painted drywall
- Deposit Risk: High
- Landlord Permission: Check your lease
- Take It With You: Partly
Each bracket combines an adhesive pad with tiny nails, which gives these brackets some of the highest ratings in this guide. That matters once you move past sheers to lined or blackout panels.
Check before you buy
The nails make small holes. A hole is still a hole, however small, so check your lease first. On tile or glass, where the nails can't go in, the adhesive-only rating is much lower.
At move-out
Take the brackets down as the maker describes. The nails leave small holes: check your lease and ask your landlord whether you should fill them before you move out. The rod and brackets go with you.

Before you buy
Match the mount to the window first. A tension rod needs a frame on both sides, adhesive needs a smooth and clean surface, tap-in brackets need wood trim with some depth, and over-blind brackets need blinds whose top rail fits them. If the window doesn’t suit the mount, the brand won’t matter.
Check the rating against your curtains. Sheers weigh very little, while lined and blackout panels weigh more. Look at the rating for the way you’ll actually mount the rod: the adhesive-only number, not the one with screws.
Measure before you order. Measure across the outside of the trim for a rod above the window, or between the inside edges of the frame for a tension rod. The curtain size calculator turns those numbers into a rod length and panel size, and its tension rod setting sizes a rod inside the frame.
Check what’s in the box. Some listings are a complete rod with brackets and finials, others are brackets only. Bracket packs save money if you already own a rod, as long as its diameter fits.
At move-out
Take the curtains down first, then the rod, then the brackets, following the maker’s removal instructions. Peel adhesive slowly rather than pulling it straight off, and test any residue remover on a hidden spot before you use it on the wall.
Brackets with nails or pins leave small holes. Ask your landlord whether you should fill them, and get the answer in writing: some landlords would rather patch and paint themselves.
Take dated photos of the window and the wall around it when you move in, and again after the rod comes down. The move-in checklist and the move-out checklist cover the rest of the room.
Ready to put it up? The guide to hanging curtains without drilling goes through each method step by step, including clip rings for a rod that’s already there and magnetic rods for steel doors.

How we chose the examples
- A way to mount without drilling: spring tension, adhesive, clips that grip your blinds, or tiny nails and pins instead of screws.
- A size range and a load rating published by the maker, so you can match the rod to your window and your curtains.
- A mix of windows: recessed frames, flat walls, deep wood trim and windows that already have blinds.
- A clear way to take it down at move-out, spelled out for each kind.
Each kind shows three badges: Deposit Risk, whether you'll usually need Landlord Permission, and whether you can Take It With You. They're general guidance, and leases differ, so check yours. We describe products from the makers' own specs and instructions. Unless this page says otherwise, we haven't tested them ourselves.

Frequently asked questions
Can you hang curtains without drilling?
Yes. A tension rod presses inside a window frame, adhesive rods and brackets stick to the wall or trim, and some brackets clip onto blinds you already have. Each one suits a different window, so start with the table above that matches windows to rods.
How much weight can an adhesive curtain rod hold?
It depends on the product and the surface. Every example here lists its maker's rating, and the adhesive-only rating is lower than the rating with screws or nails. Stay under the rating for the way you actually mount it, and keep to light curtains on adhesive alone.
Will adhesive curtain rod brackets damage the wall?
They can. Adhesive can pull off paint or leave residue, especially on paint that isn't fully cured or when it's yanked off. Follow the maker's instructions for the surface, the wait before hanging anything and the removal, and test on a hidden spot if you're unsure.
Do I need my landlord's permission for a no-drill curtain rod?
Usually not for a tension rod or brackets that clip onto blinds. Brackets with nails or pins leave small holes, so check your lease first, and if it isn't clear, ask your landlord in writing.
Can a tension rod hold blackout curtains?
Some can. Compare the rod's rating with the weight of your panels, and make sure it fits snugly inside the frame. For heavy blackout panels, brackets with a higher rating are the safer choice.
What size curtain rod do I need?
For a rod above the window, the window width plus a few inches on each side, so the curtains can open past the glass. For a tension rod, the inside width of the frame. The curtain size calculator works out both.
